The City of Chanhassen and Carver County are currently considering improvements to Galpin Boulevard between Highway 5 and the northern city limits. The existing roadway pavement is in poor condition and is in need of upgrades including improvements to traffic operations and safety.
The City and County have initiated a study to evaluate the existing roadway and to take a look at potential improvements that could include:
- Installation of curb and gutter and storm sewer
- Sidewalk and trail connections
- Intersection upgrades
- Stormwater quality improvements
Currently, this section of Galpin Boulevard is owned and maintained by Carver County. If Galpin Boulevard is reconstructed, it would be turned over to the City of Chanhassen for future operations and maintenance.
Important: The improvements will not include any additional traffic lanes north of W. 78th Street but additional turn lanes are being considered at some intersections. No assessments to property owners are being proposed as a part of the project.
The roadway is currently in poor condition and needs to be upgraded to current design standards including the installation of curb and gutter and a storm sewer system.
Purpose and Evaluations
The preliminary design study will enable the City of Chanhassen and Carver County to determine the scope and estimated cost of the improvements, and allow the City and County to begin to develop a proposed funding plan for the project. The study will also help the City better plan for future development along the corridor.
Goals & Objectives
Investigate Intersection Improvements
No additional thru traffic lanes are proposed north of West 78th Street. Additional turn lanes may be added at some intersections and the study is also investigating other potential intersection improvements including roundabouts and enhanced pedestrian crossings. Paved shoulders are also being considered.
Evaluate Speed Limit
The current speed limit between Highway 5 and Lake Lucy Road is 45 MPH. The speed limit north of Lake Lucy Road is 40 MPH. The study will evaluate if the speed limits can be lowered.
Investigate Sidewalk and Trail Improvements
Trail improvements are included as a part of this study. It is anticipated that the project will include trails along both sides of Galpin Boulevard between Highway 5 and Lake Lucy Road. The preliminary design study will further investigate possible sidewalk and trail improvements north of Lake Lucy Road.
Stormwater Quality Improvements
Stormwater improvements are included as a part of this study.
It is anticipated that construction could occur in 2022, however, the exact schedule has not yet been determined.
