In a recent Twin Cities Metro Area school pilot study, more than 80% of school supplies were found to be reusable in an end of the year clean out event. The supplies were collected and used the following summer and school year, saving money for families and the school. The event also reduced the large loads of trash typically experienced at clean out time, saving more money and reducing the school’s environmental footprint. With adult guidance, the students enjoyed the event, conducting the sorting themselves.
This toolkit, produced by Carver County and other metro counties, can serve as a guide for your school to reclaim usable supplies such as glue, pencils, paper, crayons, file folders, etc., at the end of the school year. Carver County has staff available to help with your efforts, can supply sorting bins (while supplies last!) and bin signage.
