Driver's License Information
Starting October 1, both locations will be using the State's new driver's licensing software for issuance. More information is available by clicking this link. Please note there is no need for Minnesotans to rush to get a Federal Real ID. You can use your MN Standard license or ID for federal purposes, including boarding domestic flights, until October 1, 2020.
Exams: Written tests and road tests are only available at the Chaska facility. Drivers manuals can be accessed online:
Instruction Permit: First-time permits are available at the Chaska facility only. When applying for your first Instruction Permit, you must complete a written Driver's Test. Applicants must have a Course Completion Card along with 2 forms of identification. (See Proof of Identity.) After completing the written test, you will have to complete an application for the permit, have your vision checked, have a photo taken and give your social security number for the application. Applicants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or present an application containing a notarized signature of a parent or legal guardian. If applying for a renewal, the original permit must be presented. The fee for an Instruction Permit is $13.25.
Reinstatement: Testing, which is done by the State, and fee payment can only be done at the Chaska facility.
Relocating from Another State: You are required to take an exam and you must do so at the Chaska facility.
Renewal: Service is available at both the Chaska and Chanhassen facilities. A vision test and photo will be taken during the renewal process. Applicants under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or present an application containing a notarized signature of a parent or legal guardian. If you have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL), you must complete a Self-Certification Form and bring your current Medical Examiner's Certificate and any needed waivers to renew your CDL. In addition to the Self-Certification Form, you will need to present one of the following documents along with your current CDL:
State ID Card Information
In order to apply for a State Identification (ID) Card, you must present two forms of identity. (See Proof of Identity.) A photo will be taken and included on the identification card. To receive a Reduced Fee Identification Card complete the Eligibility Verification for Reduced Fee ID Card Form. The initial application/renewal fee is $19.25. The fee for senior citizens age 65+ is $16.50. The fee for a duplicate card is $14.75. The fee for the Reduced Fee ID Card is $0.50.
