Starting October 1, the Chaska License Center and Chanhassen Service Center will be using the State’s new driver’s licensing software that was built for issuing Federal REAL ID’s, Standard MN Driver’s licenses and by appointment only - Enhanced Driver’s Licenses. Please expect longer wait times due to the implementation of this new software program and increased transaction time to process Real ID-compliant drivers’ licenses and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses. New protocols have been implemented that include new training, yearly background checks for driver’s license agents and more extensive identification verification.
There’s no need for Minnesotans to rush to get a Federal REAL ID. You can use your MN standard license or ID card for federal purposes, including boarding domestic flights, until October 1, 2020.
The documentation requirements for a Federal REAL ID have changed significantly from a standard Minnesota driver’s license. To apply for a Federal REAL ID, you will need to provide the following documents in person:
- One document proving identity, date of birth and legal presence in the United States, such as a passport or a birth certificate;
- One document proving social security number; and
- Two documents proving current residency in Minnesota. Examples include a valid driver’s license or ID card, a cancelled check or a credit card statement
Federal REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the states and the Federal Government to improve the reliability and accuracy of state-issued identification documents, which should inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification.Learn more about Federal REAL ID and Enhanced Driver’s Licenses at the State of Minnesota’s Department of Public Safety website at https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/real-id/Pages/default.aspx.
