Helpers - Definition & Training Requirements

HELPERS – An adolescent at least 13 years old and less than 18 years old who assists the provider but CANNOT be left alone with the children nor be delegated supervision responsibilities.

Requirements to become a helper:

  • Submit a background study
  • Sign a Chemical Substance Abuse form
  • Complete and submit all other forms & documents provided by the licensing agency

Initial Training Required:

  • SUID (Sudden Unexpected Infant Death) training before caring for infants
  • AHT (Abusive Head Trauma) before caring for children under school-age
  • Receive training from the provider on their Emergency Preparedness Plan
  • CPR and First Aid training (not required but strongly recommended)

On-going Training Required:

  • 6 hours of training within the first year of employment 
  • SUID/AHT – Repeat every 2 years 
  • SUID/AHT Videos – View during the off year between the SUID/AHT training
  • Review & initial the Emergency Preparedness Plan - Repeat annually
  • CPR and First Aid – Repeat every 2 years (not required)
