Frost Flowers on Benton Lake
Have you seen this phenomenon? They are called frost flowers! They form on thin lake ice and young sea ice in cold, calm conditions. These frost flowers were seen at Benton Lake where slow moving water at the outlet caused a very thin layer of ice at the surface during frigid temperatures. The air temperature must be colder than the ice for them to grow upwards as in the picture. Be on the lookout during today’s deep freeze!
