County Ordinance Codification
Purpose of Adopting a County Code
Prior to the adoption of the Code of Ordinances, the County's ordinances were not available in a single document. The ordinances and amendments were all separate documents and were difficult to access and understand. State law permits a county to adopt a "county code", a single document incorporating all of the county's general purpose ordinances into a single document. This document then replaces all of the separate ordinance documents that are addressed in the code.
To initiate the process the County submitted all of the ordinances to be codified to American Legal Publishing, the company retained to do the codification. ALP then proceeded to develop a draft code that combined the ordinances into a single document. As part of the codification process, the language in the various ordinances was standardized and updated to modern terms where necessary. References to Rules and Statutes were also changed where necessary. These changes were made by attorneys and editorial staff at American Legal Publishing.
