Land Management
As part of the 2006 County reorganization, the Land Management Department was formulated out of the land use components of the previous Planning & Zoning Department. Our Department administers and enforces the Zoning Code, Subdivision Regulations, Floodplain & Shoreland Regulations, Wetland Conservation Act, Building Regulations (Building Permits), and the Agricultural Preserve Program. We are also responsible for the Planning Commission (conditional use permits, etc.) and the Board of Adjustment (variances and appeals), which account for about 80 public hearings per year. The County is legally responsible for the land use in all ten (10) townships within the County. This area contains over 300 square miles of land. We work collaboratively with the townships (local road authorities) in making decisions and guiding development. Each of the eleven (11) cities in the County is legally responsible for its own planning and zoning, so landowners should contact those jurisdictions directly for that type of information.
The Department's responsibilities in the townships include:
- Agricultural Preserves Program
- Agricultural Structures
- Building Eligibilities (i.e., "1 per 40", wooded lot potential, etc.)
- Building Permits
- Conditional Use Permits (Planning Commission)
- Enforcement and Complaints
- Grading, Filling, Excavation Projects
- Shoreland and Floodplain Requirements
- Subdividing Property (Lot Splits, Platting)
- Variances (Board of Adjustment)
- Wetland Projects
- Zoning Permits and Questions
