The eleventh annual Metro Children’s Water Festival was held on September 24, 2008, at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. The Festival was designed to provide students with hands-on opportunities to learn about a wide variety of topics related to water and the environment. Examples of some of the topics are listed below:

• FLUSH! The Water Story (where does the water go when the toilet gets flushed?)
• Stream Creatures (The amazing variety of life in our streams, lakes and wetlands)
• The importance of wetlands
• Basic water science
• Down the Dirty Drain (learn where stormwater goes)
• Backyard Water Recycling (septic systems)
• Blue Thumb - Planting for Clean Water
• Catch A Wave! (learn about the energy, speed and size of waves)
• Clancy, the amazing mercury sniffing dog.
• Singing Rivers (Sing about Minnesota’s great rivers)

Hundreds of fifth grade students from the seven metropolitan twin cities area counties came to learn about our most precious natural resource: water. It was a beautiful, sunny September day with comfortable temperatures in the 60’s and 70s. The presenters at each learning station worked hard to get their message across to the students. Many of the students were very enthusiastic and asked numerous good questions at the presentations.

Congratulations to all those students that gave it their best effort and learned how they can help ensure that we will have enough good quality water in the future. And thanks to all the classroom teachers, festival presenters and other volunteers who helped make the festival a great experience.

How big was the 2008 Metro Children’s Water Festival?  Approximately 1200 students attended!  In addition, many teachers, parents and volunteers participated.
