2004 Festival

2004

The seventh annual Metro Children’s Water Festival was held on September 29, 2004,See the Photo Album at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. The Festival was designed to provide students with hands-on opportunities to learn about a wide variety of topics related to water and the environment. An example of some of the topics are listed below:

  • The Incredible Journey (of a water drop in the water cycle)
  • A Model Stream (Learn how streams determine their path)
  • The Mystery of the Disappearing Waterfall
  • Clancy, the Amazing Mercury-Sniffing Dog

Swimmer pops up from under the waterIt was a beautiful, sunny autumn day and hundreds of fifth grade students from the seven metropolitan twin cities area counties came to learn about our most precious natural resource: water. The presenters at each learning station seemed to do even better than last year.   It was impressive to see how diligent many students were as they went about the task of soaking up all the knowledge about water they could at the festival.

One class had students that, all-together, spoke at least six different languages -- and only a small percentage of them spoke English at home. But their minds and hands were busy at every station -- looking, touching, picking up and investigating all of the displays, rocks, water samples, bird beaks and more. Congratulations to all those students and  teachers that gave it their best effort and learned how they can help ensure that we will have enough good quality water in the future.

How big was the 2004 Metro Children’s Water Festival?  Students from approximately 45 classrooms from 17 schools in the  7-county Twin Cities metro area attended: about 1250 students.
